Cape Town Events Calendar February 2009 - What’s Happening?

Cape Town Dragon Boat Festival - 13 - 15 February 2009

The Cape Town Dragon Boat Festival is held at the popular V&A Waterfront each year . Teams of paddlers compete for the victory in their colourful boats, where the bow has been fashioned into the head of an angry dragon.

The sport originated in China over 2400 years ago but was only introduced to South Africa in 1992 when Cape Town’s sister city in Taiwan donated two dragon boats. The sport commemorates the life and death of one of China’s foremost patriots and poets, Qu Yuan, who flung himself into a river after the Emperor refused to take his advice on various reforms.

Cape Town Pride - 20 February - 1 March 2009

Cape Town Pride is 10 days of festivities including the launch cocktail party, art exhibitions, fashion shows and the main event, the Pride Parade.

This year the "Mother of All Parades" will take place on the streets of Cape Town on 28 February to celebrate the local gay community. Brightly coloured and brilliantly designed floats are the centrepiece of the parade but keep a watch in the local newspapers for the dates and venues of the plentiful parties planned for the fortnight.

The festival has been an annual event since 1994 when South Africa's new constitution protected gay rights.
